Another graduate student publication
Congrats to recent Binghamton graduate Peter Vailakis on publishing his thesis research in Remote Sensing on deer overabundance on the Binghamton University campus. Peter did an incredible amount of fieldwork to obtain drone-based remotely sensed imagery along with ground-based photos. Learn more about the work here .

Faculty Forum Talk in Environmental Studies
Last week I was happy to share some of my research in the Environmental Studies Program at Binghamton University My talk, 'Geography everywhere: from 3D urban analysis to the classroom,' covered a range of previous work from radar-lidar data comparisons in urban areas to improving geography pedagogies in K-12.

Graduate student led publication on urban land use
Congratulations are in order for Farhan Ishrak for getting his thesis research about urban land use efficiency in the United States published in Geographies ! Read to full open access article here . The paper was also selected by the editors to be highlighted on the issue cover.

AGU25 sessions and poster presentation
AGU25 in New Orleans has come and gone. As always, AGU meetings are inspiring and well worth attending. I presented a poster entitled 'Evaluation of spaceborne lidar for building height estimation in small and medium-sized cities' coathored with Sharmin Akter (a recent graduate of Binghamton Geography). The poster was in the 'Remote Sensing of Urban Change' sessions that I organized with colleagues that included an oral session as well. Thanks to all that presented their wo

Alumni talk at SUNY Cortland
Last week I was able to visit my undergraduate alma mater for the first time since I graduated. I was invited to the Bond Symposium to give a talk, 'It's a big world out there: How my SUNY Cortland experience helped carve a path from being a first-generation college student to a globally engaged scholar', as an alum. This was an incredible experience to reflect on my work and my career trajectory. I also was able to meet with previous professors that impacted me and met with

NCGE conference poster
My colleague and collaborator Grayson Morgan presented our research poster, titled 'Drones in Geography Classrooms: Advantages and Challenges', at the National Council for Geographic Education Annual Conference in Omaha. This work covered partial results from a recent publication in The Professional Geographer about drone curriculum in geography higher education.

Remote Sensing of Urban Change sessions at #AGU25
I co-organized (with colleagues Son Nghiem and Tom Pingel) two sessions for #AGU25 in New Orleans on Remote Sensing of Urban Change (description below with links). Looking forward to bringing together remote sensing researchers focused on urban issues from a variety of angles and using a slew of different data sources and methods. I'll be presenting a poster myself on spaceborne lidar for 3D building height estimation as well as chairing the oral session. Hope to see you in N

Celebrating graduate students
I have been fortunate to work with so many wonderful and talented students over the years. This academic year I advised three master's students to completion of their degrees. I an incredibly proud of the work of these students and look forward to continue working with them to get their research results published in peer-reviewed journals. Great work Farhan, Shibbir, and Sharmin! Congratulations and best of luck with your future endeavors. Sharmin Akter, Thesis: Remotely Sens

Graduate Director role
I have taken on the duties of Graduate Director in the Department of Geography at Binghamton. I am excited to support our graduate students as they work through their program and conduct their research. If you have any undergraduate students interested in pursuing a master's in geography, please send them my way! We have a great program with a long history (strengths across geography but urban geography and GIScience remain thematic pillars of the program). https://www.bingha

Return to Binghamton
After a wonderful 6-months abroad as a Fulbright Fellow/Scholar at the University of Galway in Ireland, I have returned home to Binghamton. I feel incredibly lucky to have spent time in Galway with amazing colleagues and being immersed in Irish life for this time. I cannot recommend enough the Fulbright program, which offers life changing experiences to students and faculty alike. Look into it and apply!
