2nd WMU Mapathon held
Happy Geography Awareness Week (GeoWeek) to all! To celebrate this along with GIS Day, WMU Geography held its second ever Mapathon event on Nov. 13 from 5-10pm. Students, staff, and faculty from across campus gathered in WMU Geography's GIS Labs to contribute data to OpenStreetMap. This year we specifically focused our edits on the WMU campus and greater Kalamazoo as well as participants' hometowns and other locations of interest. Unfortunately many didn't use our hashtag #WMUmapathon so we are only able to track the edits of 21 of the 54 contributors. But, these 21 mappers contributed 5,562 map changes including 541 buildings, 91 highways, 24 land-uses, and 3 waterways. Edits were mostly in Michigan but also in Wisconsin and other nearby states.
Thank you to all that helped hold the event (Kevin Haynes, Claire Gilbert, Geography faculty for their support, Jason Glatz at WMU Libraries, the Haenicke Institute for Global Education, and more) and those that participated!
